[Project-ideas] Adding Grammar rules to existing machine translation systems

I am Govind Chintapalli, a third year Computer Science & Engineering
Student at IIT-Bombay.

I am studying Machine Translation under Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharya
(http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/~pb/) at Centre for Indian Language
Technology(http://www.cfilt.iitb.ac.in/) .
My interests are NLP , Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition.

I am interested in the project "Adding Grammar Rules to a machine
translation system".
Should I be familiar with Bengali , to work on this project?
